Rekey when you move in. Every time.

This is the single most worthwhile thing on this page. When you buy a house or move into a rental, you have no idea how many copies of that key exist. Previous owners, their kids, contractors, the neighbor who watered the plants, a tenant from three years ago. Rekeying changes which key operates the lock, so every one of those copies stops working immediately — and it costs a fraction of replacing the hardware.

Rekey or replace?

Rekeying is usually the answer. If the lock is solid and functioning, there's no reason to throw it away. Replacement makes sense when the hardware is worn out, damaged, low quality to begin with, or you actually want an upgrade — a better deadbolt, a keypad, a smart lock. We'll tell you which situation you're in rather than defaulting to the more expensive one.

Keying alike

If you're carrying separate keys for the front door, back door, garage side door, and shed, they can almost certainly be keyed alike — one key, everything. The only requirement is a compatible keyway, meaning the locks share a family like all Kwikset or all Schlage. It's a small job with a disproportionate improvement to daily life.

House lockouts

Locked out at 2am with the kids in the car, or at 7am on the way to work — either way, we open residential doors without damage in the overwhelming majority of cases. Drilling is a last resort and we'll tell you before we go there, not after.

Hardware that's failing

A deadbolt that needs shouldering, a knob that turns without retracting, a door that only latches if you lift it. These are all fixable and they're all warnings. Locks fail gradually and then completely, usually at the worst moment.

Landlords and rental turnover

Rental property has a recurring version of this: every tenant change is a rekey. We can set up turnover procedures and key control across multiple units so you aren't improvising each time somebody moves out.

Common Questions

Residential Locksmith FAQ

How long does a rekey take?

A typical house with a few doors is usually well under an hour once we're there.

Can you install a smart lock I already bought?

Yes. We install customer-supplied hardware regularly, and we'll make sure the deadbolt aligns properly so the motor isn't fighting the door — misalignment is the main reason smart locks fail early.

Do I need to prove I live there?

Yes. Proof of residence or authorization is required before we open any door. It protects you as much as it protects us.

What if I've lost the only key to my house?

Not a problem. We can open it, then rekey or make new keys on the spot.

Need a locksmith right now?
